United Way announces board additions

United Way of Greenville County has added three community leaders to its Board of Directors for 2025.

During the organization’s annual meeting in December, United Way’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the nominations of Oxford Capital Partners Principal and Managing Partner Henry Horowitz, Institute for Child Success President and CEO Jamie Moon, and Dr. Phyllis MacGilvray, dean and professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, to serve on the 40-member board.

“United Way of Greenville County is thrilled to welcome these exceptional community leaders to our board of directors,” said Meghan Barp, president and CEO of United Way of Greenville County. “Their diverse expertise, passion for service, and commitment to improving lives will certainly strengthen our efforts to build a Greenville County where all people have access to the opportunities to achieve their full potential.”

The new year also brings an updated slate of directors serving as the board’s executive committee. Karen Baynes-Dunning begins her two-year term as the board’s chair. Baynes-Dunning is a prominent lawyer, judge and community leader with significant expertise in child welfare, social justice and public policy. She has served as a juvenile court judge and held leadership roles in various organizations, including acting as the interim president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

Baynes-Dunning succeeds Dr. Saria Saccocio of Essence Healthcare, who will continue to serve on the board in the role of immediate past chair. They will be joined on the executive committee by Michelin North America’s Adam Murphy as vice chair, TD Bank’s David Lominack as secretary, Jim Akerhielm of JENK LLC as treasurer, and Clemson University’s Julio Hernandez as community impact chair.

Retired attorney and long-time United Way volunteer Tami McKnew, who previously served as treasurer, was named Director Emeritus.

Director Bios

Henry Horowitz

Henry Horowitz is an accomplished business leader, entrepreneur and community advocate whose professional journey reflects a blend of innovation and dedication to community service. As the founder and managing principal of Oxford Capital Partners, LLC, and MedProperties Holdings, LLC, Horowitz has demonstrated a consistent ability to identify opportunities and drive success. His leadership has left an indelible mark on organizations like Insignia Financial Group and Cyrk & Co., where he served as president, showcasing his knack for strategic growth and innovation.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Horowitz has been a steadfast advocate for the arts, education and community development. As founder and chairman of the Artisphere Festival and chairman of the Metropolitan Arts Council, he played a pivotal role in enriching Greenville County’s cultural landscape. His involvement spans numerous organizations, including the Peace Center, Furman University and Bon Secours Health System. His contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Order of the Palmetto and the Buck Mickel Leadership Award.

A graduate of the Bernard Baruch School of Public and Business Administration, he has been celebrated as one of the 50 Most Influential in both Greenville and the Upstate. Most recently, the Greenville Community Foundation honored him with a Visionary Leader and Lifetime Achievement Award, reflecting his lifelong commitment to excellence and service.

Dr. Phyllis MacGilvray

Dr. Phyllis MacGilvray, MD, FAAFP became Dean of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (SOMG) on July 1, 2024. She is the first medical school dean in the country board certified in lifestyle medicine, which focuses on the use of evidence-based lifestyle interventions to prevent, treat and reverse chronic diseases.

In her previous role, MacGilvray served as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at SOMG, overseeing all aspects of undergraduate medical education, lifestyle medicine, and the school’s new Primary Care Accelerated Track (PCAT) program. As a native South Carolinian from Abbeville, she has maintained a full-scope family medicine practice for over 20 years. MacGilvray is a practicing physician in Greenville, in family medicine with obstetrics.

A first-generation college student, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Clemson University and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed residency training in family medicine at the University of Vermont, followed by academic leadership positions at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune and at the University of Texas Health San Antonio.

Jamie Moon

As Institute for Child Success (ICS) President and CEO, Jamie Moon oversees the organization’s mission, operational and strategic direction focusing on early childhood education, health and wellbeing. Moon joined ICS as President in 2012. Originally from the Upstate of South Carolina, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and master’s degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, D.C.

Moon serves as Board Chair of Together SC’s Advocacy Allies and is a founding Board member of the Nicholtown Child and Family Collaborative. He serves on the capacity building grants committees of the Greenville Community Foundation and the Sisters of Charity SC Kinship Care Advisory Council.

A former Chair of the Greenville Chamber’s Nonprofit Alliance and the Rotary Club of Greenville’s early literacy program, Moon is a past recipient of the Rotary Club of Greenville’s Literacy Champion Award. In 2014, he was awarded the 2014 Child Advocacy Award by the S.C. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

A graduate of the Riley Institute at Furman University’s Diversity Leaders Initiative, he formerly served on Advisory Board member for Clemson University’s Elementary and Early Childhood Education Programs, and on the Advisory Committee for the Early Childhood Development program at Greenville Technical College.
