United Way is lending our voice and community convening power to advocate for increased access to public transportation, anddevelopingnew ways to remove transportation as a barrier to healthcare, education and employment.
Lack of access to safe and reliable transportation is a growing barrier to financial stability for many in Greenville County. The issue impacts almost every aspect of a person’s daily life: where they work, shop, go to school, access medical care and more.
In a 2015 survey, 22% of people in Greenville County said they had trouble getting to their job due to transportation and 21% had trouble getting to the grocery store or pharmacy. As gentrification pushes individuals further and further away from our city centers to access affordable housing, the problem is only increasing. Nearly half of car owners said, at least a few times a month, they could not drive due to the cost of gas or maintenance.
With our region on pace to add another 240,000 people by 2040, the time to act is now.
Having access to consistent, reliable and affordable transportation greatly impacts our neighbors’ employment and overall wellbeing.
